Domaine Bachey-Legros Santenay ‘Sous La Roche’

This appellation is situated up above the “Beaurepaire” Premier Crus, in Santenay. “Sous La Roche” is named very appropriately, as it is very close to the bedrock, scattered with little murger stone walls, the soils bring lots of minerality to the wine. Another peculiarity of the location is that at night the surface stones give off the heat retained during the day, allowing the grapes to mature perfectly, and giving the wine a distinct roundness. All these natural qualities led us to plant Chardonnay here. Ultimately, our Santenay “Sous La Roche” with its natural well balanced freshness has all the qualities of great white wines

The rich character of our Domain lies in its “vieilles vignes”(old vines). These low yielding vines, with deeply-anchored roots and concentrated grapes, provide the foundation which, with our loving care and hard work, produces top quality wines. Power is matched with elegance and the voice of their terroir is loud and clear. Balance is the key.

The style and quality of our wines are intimately linked with the history of our family, a history spanning six generations since the 19th century: Francois Bachey, Lazare, Joseph, Marcel and Christiane, each one of them an only child. These successive generations of the family have passed on, in its entirety, a unique heritage and philosophy.

The heritage: a vineyard of 18 hectares, expanded by each generation, comprising the best plots in Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Maranges, where all the finesse of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are expressed. And, above all, vines planted for the most part between 1935 and 1955 and nurtured with care, year after year.
